Tips what to wear with a sweater dress in winter
If designer thought to turn a sweater to a dress with different shapes and styles, then we might as well wear it in winter. A sweater dress will be one the best addition you made to your wardrobe this season. In fact, You can wear it casually to get some errands, chic for a night out or appropriate to work with simple tips and tricks. I got the sweater dress you see in the pictures from Express. They have a great selection this year. You can check it out in here.
Master the art of layering
Layering in winter is important to keep you warm. Unlike fall, In winter, you cannot go out in a cold day with simple sweater dress, shoes and topped with cardigan or coat. In order to keep your body warm, I suggest to add a layer under your garments. While you cannot see it in my pictures, I have a thermal top under my sweater dress to keep my body warm. If you have a long sweater dress, Then add a layer underneath to keep you warm. Another trick is to add tights to your dress. Recently, tights come back to us millennial with so many designs and colors to flatters any look while elongating our legs. Thus, I suggest to go tights shopping if you do not have any. My favorite online stores for tights are ASOS, Nordstrom, and Macy’s.
I love the bow fishnet tights I am wearing from Kate Spade. Surprisingly, this is my second year of wearing these tights. I wore them with so many outfits and they hold the design with few signs of wear.
Pile on accessories
Since Sweater dress acts like wearing a dress, then piling on accessories is your best option to give attention to your dress. You can go either with contrasting accessories colors such as white or nude if you are wearing a black sweater dress. Think one color from sunglasses, jewelry to boots. Or you can complement the dress with colors from the same hue of your dress. In today’s outfit, I choose to pair my black sweater dress with 3 color combination to match my strip sweater dress. In addition, I added a mix of silver and gold accessories to complement the dress. With sweater dresses, You can also go big with statement jewelry. However, if you decide to go with chunky accessories. Choose one statement accessory; It can be a necklace or long big earrings. I find one statement accessories give an instant outfit success.
Or keep it minimal with a few small pieces of jewelry.
Add a belt
Adding a belt to your sweater dress will accentuate your curve and get. Since most sweater dresses are shapeless, adding a belt will define the look of the dress. The sleeker the belt the more elegant the look. I opted in a rope belt I snagged at a garage sale in our neighborhood. It is metal with satin black rope wrapped in it. You can instead add a broad belt to give it a bold look. For a thick knitted sweater dress. I love a wide belt as I featured with a white and black striped sweater. It gives it an edgy look with little drama. and this will take me to my next tip
Add boots
To give your sweater dress an edgy look, go with high heel boots. The most obvious option to add to your feet in winter is to have boots on. You can go big with high heels booties as I did. Or you can keep it low key with combat boots. But you can go for ankle booties too, knee-high or even OTK boots. You can also add socks depending on your boots height. Under my booties, I wore ankle socks over my tights with my high heels. It kept my feet warm the whole day. Legwarmer is another great option. You can hide your boots or let them show.
Opt-in for a blazer
This year blazer went viral. Everywhere I go, I see people styling them with their outfit. If you have a blazer that you wanted to style it with your outfit, then this is your chance. I find adding a blazer to your sweater dress with or without belt give an updated look to the sweater dress in winter. Now, I still do not own a blazer. Yep, you might say well how come she is recommending a blazer and she does not have it. Well to justify why I do not have a blazer, I will simply tell you that I am still in a hunt for a statement one. One that I can wear over my outfits whenever I want to. If you have any place where they have a cute blazer, please let me know.
But for now, I can tell you adding a blazer will give any sweater dress an oomph moment while keeping you warm.
